Starting a business can be hard. There are many pitfalls entrepreneurs should avoid before taking on such a big task. While owning your own business can seem super appealing, it isn’t without risk. If you seek the reward, understand the actions you should avoid.
Here are a few of my thoughts.
Avoid Singular Visions Revolving Around Making Money
Of course, the goal of having a business is to make money. There is nothing inherently wrong with having profit as a core component of your business ambitions. The problem arises when that’s the only goal because in the end, you stop focusing on improving and evolving the services and products. The services and products need to be great in order to possess value.
If Mailer House focused only on profits and not on being the best third party mailer and printing service, then we’d be slouching in our services. But we focus on making sure companies love our invoice and coupon printing and mailing. This gives our product value. We sell based on value. That makes us money.
Don’t Start A Business Because You Want Time And Freedom
But isn’t that what being your own boss means? The answer, in short, is not really. I hear it all the time “I want to be my own boss and come and go as I please.” The problem is, when you own your own business, you are never off the clock. You will likely work more than ever before because your income is so heavily reliant on your business’s success. Lots of people hate working for other people. I get that. But when you own a business, you need to keep in mind that your new boss is your customers and they can be just as annoying, if not more annoying, than your old boss.
Don’t Fly By The Seat Of Your Pants
Raw unadulterated energy is a great thing to have when it comes to starting a business, but don’t allow it to get the best of you. You need to plan things out, as lame as that may seem. The fact is, revenue statements, projections and project management all need to be in play when it comes to running a business. If it becomes too much, make sure you check out Mailer House’s services. We can help you with your invoice printing and mailing needs.
Remember, owning a business can be a life changing experience. But make sure you do it for the right reasons.
